In 2023, BYD became the world’s largest manufacturer of EVs. It is also a significant manufacturer of EV batteries. Overall, BYD’s product range covers the entire industrial chain of NEVs, including passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, batteries, and automotive electronics.
Consequently, suppliers around the world are striving to keep up with the rapid pace of demand growth in battery raw materials. Various factors have disrupted the supply chains of battery materials creating a serious mix of risks for secure and rapid road transport decarbonization.
Underlying this conflict is a growing trade war between China and the EU that has taken the form of domestic policies and multilateral trade agreements that seek to reduce China's dominant role in the production of lithium-ion batteries (Bridge and Faigen, 2022; Chang and Bradsher, 2023; Torjesen, 2024).
