Energy storage projects, particularly battery energy storage systems (BESSs), have flooded interconnection queues across North America "overnight". Standalone BESS projects as well as BESS coupled with renewable energy generation components – hybrid plants – are some of the most common resources being studied for interconnection today
Illustration of the battery concept. Photo: Energy Vault. Energy Vault''s battery does this by stacking concrete blocks into an organized potential-energy-rich tower. The battery is charged by using excess electricity to power crane motors which lift concrete blocks. The higher a block is lifted, the more potential energy it has stored. Later

Projections are that more than 60% of all vehicles sold by 2030 will be EVs, and battery technology is instrumental in supporting that growth. Batteries also play a vital role in enhancing power-grid resilience by providing backup power during outages and improving stability in the face of intermittent solar or wind generation.
In 2024, Harvard researchers revealed a design that enables ultra-fast charging and thousands of cycles without degradation in solid-state batteries. Another team at the University of Chicago developed an anode-free sodium solid-state battery, marking a significant step toward safer, high-capacity batteries for EVs and grid storage.
These batteries are particularly well-suited for large-scale energy storage systems, such as renewable energy grids and stationary storage solutions. With ongoing advancements in energy density and charge efficiency, they also hold potential for applications in electric vehicles and portable electronics.
In addition, alternative batteries are being developed that reduce reliance on rare earth metals. These include solid-state batteries that replace the Li-Ion battery’s liquid electrolyte with a solid electrolyte, resulting in a more efficient and safer battery.
