The Energy Storage Project, also known as BESS, is one of the pillars of the $236 million MCC-Kosovo Compact Program. The project will introduce a state-of-the-art battery storage system and entails the largest energy investment in Kosovo during the last few decades.
Kosovo* intends to launch market-based reserve services and reach at least 170 MW of flexible regulation capacity by 2031. The size of batteries in storage facilities planned to be completed by the end of the period is 170 MW, with an overall two-hour capacity, translating to 340 MWh.
In its new energy strategy, Kosovo* vowed to provide reliable, affordable and clean energy to secure economic development and the wellbeing of citizens, who it said would be at the heart of its energy future. The government aims to reach 1.6 GW in renewable electricity capacity and introduce batteries of 340 MWh in total by 2031.
According to its energy strategy, Kosovo also plans to hold two auctions for battery storage projects with a cumulative capacity of 170 MW. The minister expects that 45 MW/90 MWh and 125 MW/250 MWh battery storage procurement exercises will be launched this year in cooperation with US-based Millennium Challenge Corp. (MCC).
Kosovo* will own the facilities, the ministry added. Economy minister Artane Rizvanolli said the program would back the independence of the national energy system and enable its transformation. The details will be made known after negotiations between the government and MCC, planned for May.
The system will stabilize the fluctuating frequency of electricity, store energy in the early hours of the morning when consumption is low, and connect with solar, wind, or similar power plants. Kosovo* will own the facilities, the ministry added.
On the other hand, Neshati noted that βThe Energy Storage Project is the largest energy project in Kosovo in decades and the most significant Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Europe (MW per capita). β.
