Te Mana O Te Ra ("The Power of The Sun") is a photovoltaic power station at Rarotonga International Airport in the Cook Islands. It is the largest solar power station in the Cook Islands. It is owned and operated by Te Aponga Uira. The array consists of 3051 solar panels and has a peak output of 960 kW. [1]
To support this ambitious plan the Asian Development Bank and the European Union fund the Cook Islands Renewable Energy Sector Project, which will construct up to six solar photovoltaic (PV)...
Grid connected solar generators ranges in size from 1kWp – 960kWp. Currently connections to the grid is on hold. Next phase involves storage, enablers, power station control system upgrade - starting 2017.
Installation of solar panels was completed earlier this month, and now solar power provides all of the needs for these islands. It seems that the creation of this solar utopia was possible due to the fact that the islands are rather small in land mass and have a population of just 1,500. The installation of solar panels marks a new beginning
The defined Atiu subproject broadly consists of a 1.5 hectare site with 400 kW of solar photovoltaics (PV) modules, connected to a new renewable energy station with 2.9 MWh of batteries, plus inverters and other equipment. It is estimated that at average load, the batteries can provide up to.

The project has installed solar systems to ensure that the atoll has access to reliable and renewable energy reducing reliance on fossil fuels. In total, 210 solar panels of 255W capacity were installed on the island. These systems will generate approximately 260kWh of energy everyday, charging the battery bank and meeting the energy demands of

Solar panels connected in parallel are generally used with pulse width modulation (PWM) charge controllers. Series-parallel connection. Engineers also connect solar panels in a series-parallel configuration. Several panels are first wired together in series to form strings of panels (for instance, three strings of solar panels featuring two panels connected in

Foreign Minister Murray McCully and Cook Islands Prime Minister Henry Puna have officially opened solar arrays on the Northern Cook islands of Penrhyn and Manihiki this week, and marked the completion of the Cook Islands Solar Project. "The new solar arrays will provide over 95 per cent of the electricity needs for the villages
New solar plus battery projects in the Cook Islands demonstrate how off-grid regions can escape reliance on diesel generators.. Six of the twelve inhabited Cook Islands are the target of hybrid renewable energy projects comprising solar and solar battery technology. The first of these, on Mitiaro Island, is now complete and should be able to supply all the power
To support this ambitious plan the Asian Development Bank and the European Union fund the Cook Islands Renewable Energy Sector Project, which will construct up to six solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants with a total installed capacity of about 3 megawatts-peak coupled with battery to store electricity from solar energy.
Although nearly all households in the Cook Islands are connected to grid electricity, only 5.5% of households have additional solar photovoltaic systems installed, and 1% use small diesel generators. Several actions have taken place throughout the islands to increase the uptake of renewable energy.

The plant was installed in late October 2012 but does not appear to have begun working at full capacity until mid-2014. But for the three complete years of operation from 2015 though 2017 it achieved a capacity factor of only 11.5%. Figure 5: Generation from
Funding to provide solar panels with battery backup to the Northern atolls was provided by a NZ$20.5 million aid programme from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, with construction provided by PowerSmart Solar of New Zealand. [4] The first solar site at Rakahanga was completed in September 2014.

The Cook Islands Electricity Sector historically been powered by diesel generators. Since around 2011, increasing solar PV generation on Rarotonga has changed this situation. And in 2014- 15, installation of 95-100% renewable solar hybrid systems on the Northern Group Islands further altered the mix.

Now with full-time power, the future has taken a new shape for Cook Islands’ residents – an improved quality of life, and increased economy activity. The improved livelihood in the communities that now have the benefit of reliable, 24hour power supply is immeasurable.
And with local residents trained during the installation process, the community is empowered to maintain and operate the systems themselves. Now with full-time power, the future has taken a new shape for Cook Islands’ residents – an improved quality of life, and increased economy activity.
Most of the Cook Islands people live in the Southern Islands. Two largest Islands are Rarotonga (main island) and Aitutaki The Government of the Cook Islands has a long standing policy commitment of 100% renewable electricity by 2020.
The Cook Islands Located in the South Pacific Ocean, the Cook Islands has 15 islands, of which 12 are inhabited. Most of the Cook Islands 13,000 permanent residents live on Rarotonga, in the south. Aitutaki has a population of approximately 1,800, and remaining islands are sparsely populated. Fig 1.
