Consolidated tables showing an extensive listing of the highest independently confirmed efficiencies for solar cells and modules are presented. Guidelines for inclusion of results into these tables are outlined, and new entries since January 2024 are reviewed.
Solar-cell efficiency is the portion of energy in the form of sunlight that can be converted via photovoltaics into electricity by the solar cell. The efficiency of the solar cells used in a photovoltaic system, in combination with latitude and climate, determines the annual energy output of the system. For example, a solar panel with 20% efficiency and an area of 1 m 2

The highest recorded efficiency for the silicon solar cell to date is around 25% [3,4]. To overcome the production barrier of the first generation of solar cells, i.e., single crystalline silicon solar cells, the second generation of solar cells has been introduced. However, the second-generation solar cells are also not able to overcome the

Scientists have fabricated a solar cell with an efficiency of nearly 50%. The six-junction solar cell now holds the world record for the highest solar conversion efficiency at 47.1%, which was measured under concentrated illumination. A variation of the same cell also set the efficiency record under one-sun illumination at 39.2%.
“The format of the chart will soon change to include hybrid tandems.” The chart now includes the 33.9% world record efficiency achieved in November by Chinese manufacturer Longi for a perovskite-silicon tandem solar cell and the 27.09% efficiency achieved by the same company for a heterojunction back contact solar cell.
The chart, which shows the success of experimental solar cells, includes the previous three-junction IMM record of 37.9% established in 2013 by Sharp Corporation of Japan. The improvement in efficiency followed research into “quantum well” solar cells, which utilize many very thin layers to modify solar cell properties.
NREL scientists previously set a record in 2020 with a 39.2% efficient six-junction solar cell using III-V materials. Several of the best recent solar cells have been based on the inverted metamorphic multijunction (IMM) architecture that was invented at NREL.
There are 21 new results reported in the new version, a record number for the Tables. The international research group led by Professor Martin Green from the University of New South Wales in Australia has published Version 62 of the “ solar cell efficiency tables ” in Progress in Photovoltaics.
